Cal Poly Team Places First at GE Digital CSU Challenge

A team of Cal Poly students placed first at the GE Digital CSU Challenge on 4/29 in San Diego.  The competition spanned nearly three months, in which Cal State students were challenged to develop a novel application to tackle an important urban problem.  As part of the challenge students were able to leverage the world’s largest Internet of Things (IoT) platform deployment (3,200 intelligent nodes on streetlights), announced earlier this year by the City of San Diego.  Judges for the competition included chief technology and data officers from GE digital, the City of San Diego, and the Port of San Diego.

Perks receives Don and Paul Heye Award

EE Lecturer Gary Perks was awarded the 2015 Don and Paula Heye Award for Outstanding Teaching for the college of Engineering.    Gary Perks has been instrumental in developing "flipped classroom" techniques to enhance student learning.   Instructive videos were created for students to view outside of class meeting times.  This allows students to spend more time with engineering problem solving during the formal meeting times.   Gary has also developed some of the EE department's first summer classes (Lectures and Laboratories) that can be delivered to students while they are on internships or in activities around the globe.

The presentations were made at the College of Engineering’s winter meeting held Dec. 11. Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Dale Dolan received the two-year, $40,000 Lockheed Martin Endowed Professorship; Don & Paula Heye Award for Outstanding Teaching was presented to Vladimir Prodanov, assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department.

This summer Professor John Oliver along with six other students took a trip to NASA’s Microgravity University were they  immmersed themselves in a zero gravity environment.  The project was called “Zero Gravity Target Tracking Experiment in Real-Time” (aka 0TTER). The project was part of NASA’s “Microgravity University--Systems Engineering Educational Discovery (SEED)” Program.  

CPARC Club Responds To SLO Power Outage

On the evening of Sunday, June 23rd, 2013, over 145,000 customers in San Luis Obispo County experienced a major power outagethat was caused by equipment failure at a PG&E substation. Several Cal Poly students and alumni from the Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club (CPARC, callsign: W6BHZ) mobilized to assist in the amateur radio response to the outage.

Cal Poly's CubeSat program engineers characterized the P-POD (Poly Picosatellite Orbital Deployer) in Cal Poly's Antenna Anechoic Chamber Lab on August 2 and 30, 2012 to quantify the P-POD's effectiveness in containing emissions from CubeSat systems. The P‑POD houses three CubeSat units and launches them into orbit around Earth.

96 Amateur Radio Licenses Granted at Cal Poly Licensing Session

On Friday, November 4, 2011, a record 114 Electrical Engineering freshman students from Cal Poly attempted their FCC amateur radio technician-class license exam in the largest amateur radio licensing event ever in San Luis Obispo County.  A record-breaking 96 students succeeded in passing the official exam and joined the next generation of Ham Radio Operators in the US.
