For Joint Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
Synopsis
This program provides a means for academically excellent upper-division students to complete MSEE graduate studies while completing BSEE or BSCPE degree requirements.
Program Features
- Simplified application process.
- BS and MS coursework can be taken concurrently.
- Common project fulfills requirements for Senior Project and Master's Thesis.
- Access to graduate student facilities.
- TA appointments (if available).
- Priority registration (after reaching 186 units, and changing to Graduate Status - See EE Graduate Coordinator).
Students may apply for admission to the Joint BS/MS Honors Program after completion of all EE 300-level courses required by their undergraduate program. A feature of the program is to allow the use of a common project for fulfillment of the requirements for both the Masters Thesis and the undergraduate Senior Project (EE-CPE 461/462). In this case, a separate senior project deliverable is not required. The unit requirements for either degree are unchanged. The student must elect the MS thesis option. A student in this program, at his or her request, may be awarded the BS degree prior to the completion of the program, at a point when all requirements for the BS degree have been met, including an acceptable senior project report.
Admission Requirements
- Cal Poly cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater or a faculty nomination with a Cal Poly cumulative GPA of 3.2-3.5.
- Completion of junior year.
Undergraduate EE and CPE students who have obtained a Cal Poly cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater and have completed EE 307 (but have not yet begun work on their Senior Project) are invited to attend an information session on the program. Two sessions are held each academic year, during Fall and Spring quarters. At the information sessions, the EE Department's Graduate Coordinator provides more detailed information on the program and encourages program candidates to apply.
Students may also be admitted via a nomination process. A faculty member may nominate a student with a cumulative GPA between 3.2 and 3.5. A memo of nomination must be submitted that includes justification for considering the candidate. The candidate must submit the normally required application information. The complete package is then reviewed by the Graduate Committee, which will make a recommendation on acceptance the Graduate Coordinator.
