Announcement: CUR Proposal Writing Institute
- Published On: May 12, 2009
Next year's budget proposal includes increases for science funding across all science related federal agencies. It is an exciting time for scientific research with President Obama's strong support for science and plans to increase research and development funding to 3% of GDP. With over $700 billion allocated to science and research by the economic-stimulus measure, it is a critical time for faculty that are seeking funding for their research from various agencies. We would like to offer assistance to your campus in seeking some of this funding for faculty research. The Council on Undergraduate Research will offer its Proposal Writing Institute July 19-23, 2009 at Willamette University in Salem, OR. It is intended for early-career faculty members, or others, who may be seeking support in writing an effective grant proposal. The workshop will consist of short presentations on various proposal writing topics (e.g. presentation and budget preparation), information about funding sources (NSF, PRF, foundations), and how to critique proposals. The primary focus of the four days will be to develop, write and revise individual proposals. In addition, peer review and critiques will be incorporated into the program, with individuals grouped by disciplines. Our goal is for attendees to leave the Institute with a proposal nearly ready for submission. We will identify gaps, and help participants learn where to go to obtain the missing information. Facilitators for the workshop are successful proposal writers and have had experience in reviewing proposals. Participants will also have significant time to work closely with an institute facilitator to receive feedback and refine their proposal. Our institute leaders also provide follow-up review of proposals and support to institute participants.
